Tips For Beginning Skateboarders
Sunday, January 22nd, 2012Skateboarders who know what they’re doing make it all look incredibly easy. Right? Just looks like you push-off and then find your balance. Hey, surfing looks like a no-brainer. Stand-up on a board, on a wave. You’ll learn soon enough that skateboarding isn’t as easy as it appears. You must practice and develop your skills if you want to know how to do the tricks you think are so cool. If you are just starting out, here are a few hints and tips that you can use to speed up your learning process.
There’s more than meets the casual eye. It’s not just pushing yourself along. Pushing off should be a strong fluid motion. Avoid having an overly rapid and short movement.
First, you want a technique that you can recover from if you lose your balance. So try to use a strong, long movement each time. You should be able pick-up speed pretty fast. Your stance technique will dictate how you’ll be pushing-off, as well. If you’re new to skating, it’s a good idea to stay on level ground, and use a board that’s well-made and sturdy. It’s best if you can firmly plant your feet without fumbling around if you’re on an uneven surface. As you improve, of course this will be less of a concern.
Don’t be concerned about skating slowly. A lot of new skaters attempt the tricks before they have the right skills. Many times this produces frustration, anger, or worse – an injury. Just because you managed to ride a few blocks without falling off does not mean that you are ready to do tricks. Doing a board hop takes more skill than you know. Go slowly, steadily, and learn to ride for a long distance. Then learn how to start-off fast and stop yourself without falling. But if you still take a tumble any time you try to ride the board in more than a short straight line, you are not yet ready for tricks.
The two basic stances are Goofy and Regular. The Regular skateboard stance is when you put the left foot out in front, and the right foot goes in the back. In Goofy the opposite is true. There are four different kinds of push-offs you can do. Regular – use right foot to push, Mongo Regular – push with front (right) foot, Goofy – use left foot, and Mongo Goofy – push with front (left) foot. Just keep skating and in time you’ll find which one you like best. But you will see differences in stances and their strengths from one person to the next. You’ll just need to skate and in time you’ll discover what you like best. You’ll be on track to pro status before you know it if you just keep in shape and practice your basics. One day you’ll realize you’re more comfortable skateboarding than you are walking!
